Recently, I pulled out my colors and wore them just because. Actually, I was reminded of how many incredible women I have awesome relationships with, who celebrate wins together and are there for each other when one of us takes an L.

Many of those women happen to be members of my sorority, and it caused me to reflect on the strength of community within cultural institutions like those in the Divine 9 and even the Black Church, which I am currently researching and writing about for my next project.

I’m reminded of the profound impact of connection and community on well-being and success as leaders.

1️⃣ Connection and community alleviate stress and promote well-being. Research shows that social connections reduce stress and anxiety, enhancing mental health and cognitive function.

2️⃣ Community support enhances resilience in adversity. Studies reveal that strong social networks help individuals cope with challenges and bounce back from setbacks.

3️⃣ Community enhances a sense of belonging, self-esteem and fulfillment. Research in psychology highlights that a sense of belonging positively impacts self-esteem and overall life satisfaction.

Did you know that when we connect with others in our community, our brain releases oxytocin, the bonding hormone? This physiological response strengthens our social bonds and deepens our sense of belonging.

When was the last time you got together with others in ways that celebrate culture and community to nurture a sense of belonging and support at work?

When you do, you’re trouncing isolation, a formidable enemy of happiness and therefore success.
