Coach L. Co-Hosts TCU Black Excellence Night with NBC 5’s Newy Scruggs
#FlashbackFriday to last week at the Texas Christian University Black Excellence Night Gala with my cohost, Newy Scruggs.
We had a blast emceeing the event, reminiscing, storytelling and sparking thoughts and giggles throughout the night.
Hosting is fun. I host once every blue moon. Some of my most unforgettable moments were at @nabjofficial with ABC’s @linseytdavis and not long ago for my Sorors of @oao1908 when they took over a massive class of Ivies at a fancy resort near Frisco, Texas.
My most unforgettable was my first time ever hosting at the age of 22, ironically, with NBC 5s bureau chief at the time and my mentor, Larry Mullins. I was working in TV news then, writing for Clarice Tinsley at the Fox affiliate.
It was a scholarship gala, and our special guest was none other than THE Johnny Cochran fresh off the OJ trial. And yeah… I sneaked in props… I brought out some big black gloves at the culmination of an ongoing bit with Larry about how we wouldn’t mention you-know-what.
Yes, in my floor-length, sequined gown, I had the proud pleasure of making the baddest attorney on the planet at the time double over with laughter. Unforgettable.
Ultimately, your job as host is to entertain, set the scene, inform, riff, smile a lot and allow the audience to get immersed and endeared to the message while leaning in to get to know you.
Mission accomplished!
Thanks for having me TCU Global Alumni Association, TCU Black Alumni Association, TCU Diversity & Inclusion, the TCU Board of Trustees and more.
If your org, meeting or event needs a host who is not only informed and can bring context to your event, but who will get the job done with grace, poise, knowledge and giggles, reach out.
