“It’s triggering",” one woman leader told me.

Checking in with my leaders yesterday, and many of the women leaders, especially those of color, are stressed because of all that’s going on in their lives and at work, but adding on the stress of this election season is far too much for them.
I’ve been sharing with them how to manage and eradicate that stress.
When you are stressed, leaders do not perform at your best—physically and mentally. But sometimes we get into a vicious cycle of stress that precludes us from being as productive, creative and innovative as possible. And I know, in addition to life and work, sometimes the world levels drama on us that we didn’t particularly ask for. So what should you do?
Here are the 3 biggest mistakes leaders make during stressful times and keep them from operating at their best (and what you can do about it).

In 2021-2022, so many leaders were beginning to return to office even part time, but people were stressed because of increased crime, caretaking concerns with loved ones still struggling with COVID, remote school, economic tension and let’s face it… a stressful cultural and political context with someone who was in office who’d like to be there again.

In places like Texas, we were also dealing with extreme heat. In-studio appearances still weren’t happening, but the request was still the same:

How do we handle the stress of it all?

I shared tips with WFAA’s @cleogreene_tv during their noon show. The same can be applied today. I’ve heard from at least four clients today who said they were triggered by this election cycle. It's helpful as well to remember that you've faced big challenges before.

Leaders, prioritize your wellness and safety during these times. It’s important. #stressmanagement

I’ve been bothered by the near erasure of The Black Church in political discourse lately. Either you have be labeled progressive or evangelical to be counted these days.

The Black Church is neither of those things.

Then someone shows up and tries to demonize it from time to time. Much like this week when Donnie Swaggart decided to speak out of turn.

Personally, I and others like me need it and the leadership lessons from it, especially right now.

Here’s a glimpse at one insight I gained today, that everyone can benefit from as I continue my journey to releasing my next project, Call & Response: 10 Leadership Lessons from the Black Church.
