The conversations I am having on this journey toward my fourth title, my friends, give me goosebumps. While most of my interviews are with corporate titans, I have to call on historians and yes, some clergy to fill in some of the significance and cultural nuances that make the context pop. This conversation I had with Dr. Cokiesha Bailey Robinson, who is the current dean of diversity, equity and inclusion at Grace College, a sister friend from way back, a proud fellow D9 member, the daughter of the great Dr. EK Bailey who founded @concorddallas where I spent 17 years of my church life as an active member, shares with me her view of what makes a church The Black Church. You may be surprised that it is more about culture than it is about color...and only certain denominations continue to hold up that light. We even talk about the sounds that you hear there that you will not anywhere else. But as you can see, these conversations are emotional. This one made us both laugh out of sheer joy and pride for this wellspring that developed so many of today's top business leaders--even a shy young girl who remembers singing her first solo in her dad's church who thought that one day she'd be a journalist, and not a college dean or a preacher--especially in a culture that resisted women leaders. I’ve been writing since I was in college at Texas Christian University where I had a very popular column in the TCU Daily Skiff. It wasn’t without its detractors because my focus was always on the underserved, but somehow I still found myself on the homecoming court. After some time in TV news as a writer/producer, I took off into a career in strategic communication. I have global agency and Fortune 10 pedigree, and made VP before I was 30, SVP before I was 40 and was the CEO of my own integrated marketing agency for about a decade in between.

I know the power of positive self-talk, positive emotion and a positive growth mindset because that has worked for me throughout my life and career— it has gotten me through even the most trying challenges in life and corporate America. I tell those stories with my pen and on the platform along with the stories of other amazing leaders who have overcome obstacles and become some of the world’s top leaders—and who have learned how to be happy anyway.
After publishing two leadership books on my own along with a journal and editing a children’s book for my daughter who was only eight at the time, I most recently signed with Amistad/HarperCollins/JVL Media—the later being Viola Davis’imprint—to pen my fourth project: Call & Response: 10 Leadership Lessons from the Black Church. A bot just made me boo hoo while writing the chapt

A bot just made me boo hoo while writing the chapter on resilience in my latest project, Call & Response: 10 Leadership Lessons from the Black Church (Amistad/HarperCollins/JVL Media 2026). It wasn't the bot itself, it was the words it read. I use text to speech to catch up on my writing so that I can pick up and churn out another couple thousand words without stopping to re-read myself. When the she-bot read the lines about how my mother use to remind me to remember "who you are and Whose you are" and how the altar was where my Sunday scaries went to die so that Monday morning I could walk in with dignity without a hair out of place, I lost it. Having the text read to you helps you feel the emotion, feel the flow and even check for awkwardness. But there is another way I use Chrome and Google to assist in my writing process. Google docs has speech to text--you can literally put things on cruise control and give your fingers a break and dictate your prose to the computer using the built in microphone on your computer. Tech can actually enhance your art, especially when you continue to intentionally center the artist and the artistry. This mammoth project is tamable thanks to tech, and I'm "glad about it!'
